Spinal Decompression

Spinal Decompression

Gentle, effective therapy for back and neck pain

At Campbelltown Physiotherapy, we take a conservative approach to treating lower back pain and neck pain. Spinal decompression therapy is a gentle treatment for disc and joint pain that may occur after a motor vehicle accident, work-related injury or acute injury.

What is spinal decompression?

Spinal Decompression is a non-invasive traction therapy that uses negative pressure to gently lengthen and realign the disc. It is safe and effective without the normal risks of invasive procedures such as injection, anaesthesia or surgery.

Spinal decompression is effective as a non-invasive, non-surgical, drug-free alternative treatment for low back pain, neck pain, sciatica, disc degeneration, disc bulge, disc herniations and facet syndromes.

Who can have spinal decompression therapy?

Individual assessment of suitability will take place at your initial consultation. However, spinal decompression is usually not recommended for patients with severe osteoporosis, severe nerve damage, severe obesity or pregnant women.

What happens during spinal decompression?

During treatment, patients go through a process of traction and relaxation which creates a vacuum effect to allow repositioning of the disc. The vacuum also encourages fresh blood supply to the surrounding tissues to promote healing. Each spinal decompression treatment takes around 45 minutes. Most patients start with at least 3 treatments per week, tapering sessions as symptoms improve.
